Shakahola Massacre Trial Gets Green Light As 422 Witnesses Get Set to Testify

Prosecution Ready
The prosecution team, led by Martin Mbote, has amassed a significant amount of evidence. They plan to present testimonies from 422 witnesses along with electronic and other exhibits to build their case against Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 94 co-accused individuals.

Charges and Suspects
All 95 defendants face 238 counts of manslaughter for their alleged role in the Shakahola tragedy. These charges fall under Section 202 as read with Section 205 of Kenya’s criminal code.
- Defense Access to Evidence: The defense team, led by Lawrence Obonyo, has received a portion of the prosecution’s evidence, with the remaining materials promised before the hearing date.
- Trial Dates: The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, has set the trial dates for August 12th-15th and September 9th-12th, 2024. It will be conducted on a daily basis to ensure a swift resolution.
