Shakahola Massacre Suspects To Face Murder Charges After DPP Orders Prosecution

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed Kenyan authorities to bring charges against 95 individuals connected to the Shakahola massacre, including suspected cult leader Paul Mackenzie, his wife, and some survivors.

DPP Approves Charges Based on Investigation:

This development comes in a statement dated January 16, 2024, where DPP Renson Ingonga declared his approval of charges after reviewing case files and considering investigative findings by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The statement asserts sufficient evidence for prosecution.

The proposed charges, as outlined by the DPP, encompass murder, manslaughter, assault, causing grievous bodily harm, and violating the Penal Code. Additionally, some suspects may face charges related to organized crime, terrorism, child cruelty, and educational rights infringement under the Prevention of Terrorism Acts.

Ingonga instructed authorities to present the suspects to the High Court and subordinate courts promptly. However, the specific timing of these court appearances remains unclear.

Previous Detention and Survivors’ Cooperation:

Mackenzie has been in custody since March 2023 following his arrest. Notably, some survivors initially declined cooperation with investigators regarding potential evidence against him.
