Senator Sifuna Blocks Police from Firing at Protesters in CBD

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna intervened on Tuesday to prevent police from firing at protesters during a heated demonstration against the Finance Bill 2024.

The incident took place in Nairobi, where thousands had gathered to voice their opposition to the Finance Bill. As tensions rose and clashes ensued, police officers attempted to disperse the crowd around Parliament buildings.

Sifuna bravely stepped forward, positioning himself between the police and the protesters. He called for restraint and urged a peaceful resolution to the standoff.

Despite his efforts, the situation escalated as protesters forced their way into Parliament Buildings and set a police vehicle on fire.

Earlier, Members of Parliament had voted to approve the Finance Bill 2024, which many argue imposes a wave of new taxes. The bill passed with 195 votes in favor and 106 against, paving the way for President William Ruto to sign it into law.

Police were deployed around Parliament to block the entry of protesters, but they were eventually overwhelmed.

The anti-Finance Bill protest took a violent turn, with reports of several protesters being shot outside Parliament. At least three protesters were reportedly injured as the mob clashed with police.
