President William Ruto Speaks On Devastating Mai Mahiu Floods That Claimed Over 45 Lives

President William Ruto addressed the recent flooding and mudslides plaguing parts of Kenya, highlighting the government’s ongoing relief efforts.

Speaking at a summit in Nairobi, Ruto acknowledged the tragic mudslide in Mai Mahiu, claiming over 45 lives. He emphasized a “whole-of-government” approach to support affected communities. This includes readily available food supplies and support for displaced individuals.

Ruto underscored the government’s preparedness for such emergencies, crediting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s leadership in relief efforts. Gachagua visited Mai Mahiu to offer condolences and oversee operations alongside government officials.

The President announced a Cabinet meeting to discuss further support measures for victims of these natural disasters, recognizing them as casualties of climate change.

Ruto acknowledged the changing climate patterns, citing droughts followed by floods in both Kenya and neighboring countries. He emphasized the need for continuous adaptation to this “new normal.”
