Police Investigate Alleged Death Threats By Mumias East MP Peter Salasya

Kakamega County police have launched an investigation into claims that Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya threatened to kill a magistrate after an unfavorable ruling in relation to a debt owed to a local businessman.

In a complaint filed at the Kakamega Police Station on Monday, November 27, Magistrate Gladys Kiama of the Kakamega Small Claims Court accused the MP of threatening to take her life following her order that he pay businessman Robert Lutta a debt of Ksh500,000 with accrued interest and court costs.

“At around 1230 hours while at Kakamega Law Courts, having delivered a judgment in a small claim matter vide case no. SSC E541/2023 against Hon. Peter Salasya, MP for Mumias East Constituency where he had been sued for failing to refund the money loaned to him by the claimant, he (Salasya) confronted her (Magistrate) outside the courtroom and threatened to kill her and then took off,” the police report reads in part.

The report further states that Salasya has since been making threatening calls and sending WhatsApp messages to the magistrate.

Police have confirmed that investigations have commenced and efforts are underway to arrest the legislator, who is still at large.

Background to the Case

In the case, Lutta, represented by lawyer Edwin Wafula, sued Salasya on October 23, alleging that he lent the MP the amount in December last year with the expectation of repayment within two months. However, Salasya reportedly became evasive and failed to honor the debt.

Police are urging Salasya to cooperate with the investigation and refrain from making any further threats or contact with the magistrate.
