Pastor Ezekiel Odero Aired Illegal Content On TV
Pastor Ezekiel Odero aired illegal content on a television station owned by controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie, senators were told on Monday.
Communications Authority (CA) Director General Ezra Chiloba revealed the details to the Senate Ad hoc Committee on the Proliferation of Religious Organisations that Odero aired the content from January to April 2023.
Chiloba told senators Odero, the head of Newlife Prayer Center and Church, aired programmes that demonstrated exorcism during the watershed period. The watershed period is a time when the CA prohibits the airing of certain types of content, including violence, witchcraft, and other supernatural themes.
Odero’s actions are a violation of the CA’s broadcasting regulations and could result in fines or even the closure of his television station. The CA has already issued a warning to Odero and has given him until June 30 to comply with the regulations.
The Senate committee is investigating the proliferation of religious organizations in Kenya and has been hearing testimony from a number of witnesses. The committee is expected to make recommendations to the Senate on how to regulate religious organizations and protect Kenyans from exploitation.
The airing of illegal content by Pastor Ezekiel Odero is a serious matter. It is important that religious organizations comply with the law and that Kenyans are protected from exploitation. The Senate committee is doing important work in investigating the proliferation of religious organizations and I hope that their recommendations will help to protect Kenyans.
