Ng’ang’a’s Advice to Gen Z on His Popular Song ‘Zakayo’

Apostle James Ng’ang’a recently advised Gen Z not to misinterpret his song about Zakayo, clarifying that it references the biblical figure, not anyone else.

“I’ve heard Gen Z singing my song, but I didn’t mean the Zakayo some think. I released that song almost 18 years ago,” he explained.

His message follows recent Gen Z-led protests in Kenya against the proposed 2024 Finance Bill, which spurred online humor and debate around the song’s lyrics, “Shuka Zakayo,” as people connected it to current national issues. Many Kenyans have used “Zakayo” as a playful critique of President William Ruto’s tax increase proposals.

The song lyrics go: “Why are you troubled when your debt has been paid by Jesus? Zakayo, come down from the tree; today, I’ll dine at your house.” Ng’ang’a emphasized that the song’s current relevance is purely coincidental, not intentional.
