Mutindwa Market Fire Destroys Sh100 Million Worth of Property
A fire broke out at Mutindwa Market in Buruburu estate, Nairobi, on Wednesday morning, destroying property worth Sh100 million.
The fire broke out at around 2am and quickly spread to the market, which was full of traders and their goods. Traders and onlookers could only watch helplessly as their livelihoods were consumed by the flames.
The fire brigade arrived at the scene an hour later, but by then, the damage was already done. The fire engines were also only equipped with half a tank of water, which further hampered their efforts to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but traders suspect that it may have been an act of arson. They are also angry with the fire brigade for their slow response and lack of resources.
The fire has left hundreds of traders without a source of income. They are now calling on the government to provide them with assistance to rebuild their businesses.
The fire at Mutindwa Market is a reminder of the vulnerability of informal markets in Kenya. These markets are often overcrowded and poorly equipped, making them easy targets for fires. The government needs to take steps to improve fire safety in these markets to protect the livelihoods of the traders who rely on them.
