Murugi Munyi on Leaving Her Job to Pursue Content Creation Full-Time
Murugi Munyi has opened up about her decision to quit formal employment and focus entirely on content creation.
How It All Began
In an interview with Citizen TV’s YouTube channel, the mother of three revealed that her journey started in 2017 after welcoming her second child.
“I had my second-born seven years after my first child and felt frustrated by the lack of helpful content for mothers. So, I began sharing my experiences—both struggles and wins. People started following me, but at the time, I didn’t see content creation as a career,” she shared.
Her perspective changed when she landed her first brand deal.
“The first brand I worked with paid me KSh 100,000. That’s when I realized I could actually make money from this. In 2018, I decided to leave my job and pursue content creation full-time.”
Rebranding from ‘Yummy Mummy’
Initially known online as ‘Yummy Mummy,’ Murugi rebranded in 2022 to expand her reach.
“There are many ‘Yummy Mummies’ out there, and when I started, my content was heavily focused on motherhood. Over time, I realized the name was limiting me—people only saw me as a mom, yet I do so much more.”
She also noticed that most of her brand deals were baby or maternity-related, which made her feel boxed in.
“I wanted to work with brands beyond motherhood, so I decided to use my real name, Murugi Munyi.”
What Sets Her Apart?
Murugi attributes her success to consistency and divine favor.
“I believe in God’s favor, but I also work hard. There’s no single day I go without posting a video or a reel.”
She pointed out that while some content creators go viral overnight, most have to put in the work over time before attracting brand deals.
“You need to stay consistent and deliver quality content. Brands trust creators who show up consistently.”
Advice to Aspiring Content Creators
For those struggling to break through, Murugi encourages patience and adaptability.
“If you’ve been creating content for a long time without making progress, maybe it’s time to switch things up. Experiment with different types of content and, most importantly, stay true to yourself.”
Does Content Creation Pay?
For Murugi, the answer is clear.
“Speaking for myself, content creation pays. I make millions every month.”
