Mercy Tarus Appeals to President Ruto To Expedite Help On Scammed Scholarship Program
Mercy Tarus, the student who became famous for challenging the Uasin Gishu County government over its botched Ksh1.1 billion Finland and Canada scholarships program, has written to President William Ruto seeking his intervention.
In a lengthy letter, Tarus and the 179 other students who were scammed in the program pleaded with the president to help them. They argued that time was running out, and that their dreams of studying abroad were fading with each passing day.
The students also criticized Ruto’s administration for failing to help them, despite the fact that he had campaigned on a platform of supporting “hustlers” like themselves.
“Mr. President when you were vying for office one year ago, you came home to Uasin Gishu and said that this government was for the hustlers with you as the Chief Hustler and we respect that. Young hustlers in the country are now worse off this year than they were last year due to the loss of their property and money,” the letter read in parts.
The students’ appeal comes at a time when the Ruto administration is facing growing criticism for its handling of the economy and its alleged failure to deliver on its campaign promises.
It is unclear whether Ruto will respond to the students’ appeal. However, the case has highlighted the plight of many young Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet.
