Media fraternity gathers for Nick Mudimba’s final send-off

Heavy rain fell as the coffin carrying the late journalist Nick Mudimba was taken to his final resting place in Gem, Siaya County.

In a video shared on TikTok, CNN Africa Correspondent Larry Madowo was heard saying, “It’s a blessing to send off our brother.”

Fellow journalists and friends gathered on Saturday, April 5, to pay their last respects. Among those present were Trevor Ombija, Jalang’o, Larry Madowo, Ben Kitili, Seth Olale, and other members of the media fraternity who came together to celebrate Mudimba’s life.

“Final salute, rest well brother,” wrote Kitili in a heartfelt tribute.

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, spoke of his close friendship with Mudimba, highlighting the late journalist’s ambition and deep commitment to his career. Mudimba had previously worked at KTN and Switch TV before joining CGTN as a senior reporter based in Nairobi.

A funeral mass was held on Thursday, April 3, at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi in honor of his life and legacy.

Nick Mudimba is survived by his wife, Winnie Chege, their nine-year-old daughter Shanice Minoo, and an unborn child. His widow, who is due this month, shared an emotional tribute, reflecting on the tender moments they had shared and his excitement about their growing family.

“Saying goodbye to you is the hardest thing I will ever do,” she said. “The love and devotion you showed me will remain in my heart forever.” She recalled how he would place his hand on her belly, praying for their unborn child. “Your love and protection were unwavering. I will carry your memory with me in every moment.”

Mudimba passed away on Saturday, March 23, after collapsing while watching the Kenya vs. Gabon football match at his home in Syokimau. He was 37 years old. He had been diagnosed with high uric acid levels and was prescribed medication just hours before his death. According to witnesses, he had been in good spirits before collapsing and experiencing convulsions.

Preliminary autopsy results indicated that he died from respiratory distress, with his airways blocked and fluid in his lungs.
