Kware Crisis: Families and Rescuers Flee Nairobi Following Alleged Threats from DCI

Families of the Kware murder victims and volunteers who helped recover bodies have been compelled to leave Nairobi due to alleged threats from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). These threats emerged after the volunteers assisted in retrieving bodies from an abandoned quarry in the Kware area, prompting both the volunteers and the grieving families to flee the city for their safety.

Volunteers involved in the recovery effort have reported facing harassment and threats from the DCI. They claim that officials warned they would be held accountable for the bodies they retrieved, with allegations suggesting that anyone involved in the recovery would be implicated in the dumping.

“DCI warned us that anyone retrieving a body from the quarry would be held responsible and linked to the dumping,” one volunteer told Citizen TV. “It feels like they are setting us up for a case.” Another volunteer shared similar concerns, stating, “It seems like they’re implying that a case will be fabricated against us.”

Victim’s families, who had hoped to bury their loved ones, have also reported receiving threatening phone calls and feeling threatened. Many have left Nairobi to avoid the perceived danger. “I am currently the only one left in Nairobi. We don’t know when they might come for us,” a family member said.

Human rights activists have criticized the government and police, accusing them of obstructing justice and trying to prevent the truth from emerging. They question why the body retrieval operation was halted and why the bodies, which have not yet been fully released to the families, are still being withheld.

The situation has heightened concerns about the safety of those involved in the case and the transparency of the ongoing investigation.
