Karen Nyamu responds to Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has expressed her thoughts on the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

While Nyamu stated that she supports the impeachment, she emphasized that there is nothing to celebrate about it.

Reflecting on the events of August 20, 2024, Nyamu shared her astonishment at how some of her colleagues celebrated the governor’s removal. “I will never forget how some colleagues celebrated the Meru governor’s impeachment tonight. Not that I don’t support her impeachment, but celebrating?? Watu wana roho yenye sitawai elewa,” she remarked.

In a subsequent tweet, Nyamu criticized the basis for the impeachment, stating, “Very weak grounds to uphold an impeachment. The threshold was missed by far. However, a political decision had to be made to save Meru from the back and forth.”

She further added, “How are you not able to deal with your people? As governor, you were the senior politician in Meru, you should be the one doing the victimizing, not complaining of the same. All in all, it was a sad day from G7 to G6. Painful.”

Governor Kawira Mwangaza lost her seat after the Senate upheld her impeachment by the Meru County Assembly on Wednesday. The decision saw 26 senators vote to support the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, with 14 senators abstaining and four voting against the impeachment.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted in favor, two opposed, and 14 abstained. For the charge of abuse of office, 27 senators voted to uphold, one voted against, and 14 abstained.
