Senator Karen Nyamu, who has been nominated, has responded to recent claims that she was a victim of gender-based violence (GBV).

The incident started when a picture of Karen, who was sad-looking and had a swollen right eye, went viral and many of her internet fans mistook it for a black eye.

In response to the rumors, Karen voiced her disregard for what others had to say about her private life during a Live session on her Facebook page.

She acknowledged that she occasionally feels worried if there isn’t any conversation about her.

The mother of three, however, emphasized that one specific occurrence had struck her notice.

“On Friday, we took some photos, and in one of them, my eye is partially covered. Some people especially women are making fun of it, using it to settle scores or as ammunition against their enemies.”

She stressed the seriousness of GBV, which affects 40% of Kenyan women, and the importance of not trivializing it.

She acknowledged that she had experienced GBV in the past and that she would never try to hide such experiences because she values openness.

Karen expressed her dissatisfaction with the way some people approach the subject, wondering how they would respond if she were a real victim.

She also questioned some women’s seeming bitterness.

She said that she had not been beaten by anyone, thus she was not present to defend herself.

“I am here to raise awareness about GBV and to emphasize that it is not something to joke about. If I ever experience such violence, I will come forward, speak out loudly, and seek justice. But for now, I have not faced any physical abuse since the last time I talked about it.

I have raised the issue with the person who is thought to have beaten me and he told me to ignore that but, I would never sip under the carpet. Is that how people would treat me if indeed I was a victim? Why are some women so bitter even with such things. I am not here to defend myself. I have not been beaten by anyone.

Askari has not beaten me and there is no black eye.”
