Journalists Covering Anti-Government Protests Attacked
A vehicle belonging to Citizen TV was stoned along Mbagathi road on Wednesday as journalists covered anti-government protests called by the opposition. The car’s windscreen was damaged.
In Mathare, Nairobi, KTN News reporter Francis Odee was forced to scamper for safety while covering demonstrations. Protesters engaged the police in running battles.
The protests were banned by the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, who said that they were illegal because the Raila Odinga-led outfit had not notified the police of plans to hold them.
“In this regard, no such demonstrations/gatherings, or protests will be allowed on Wednesday since no such notification has been presented to any police station. All lawful means will be used to disperse such demonstrations,” Koome said.
The attacks on journalists are a serious concern, and they highlight the need for the police to protect the media from violence. Journalists have a right to report on protests, and they should not be targeted for doing their job.
