Jeff Mwathi’s father asserts his son was killed
Interior designer Jeff Mwathi was murdered, and the narratives suggesting he committed suicide are misleading, according to his father, Peter Ngugi, who spoke at an inquest.
CHECK OUT:
Jeff, whose full name was Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi, died on February 22, 2023, at Redwood apartment in Roysambu, Nairobi. It was alleged that he fell to his death in a suicide attempt after a night of drinking with DJ Fatxo, real name Lawrence Njuguna Wagura. The two had met on February 21 for an interior design job at DJ Fatxo’s business along the Eastern Bypass. They later visited various bars and clubs before heading to Fatxo’s apartment around 3 am on February 22.
During the inquest at Milimani Magistrate’s Court, Ngugi testified that Jeff was with DJ Fatxo and three women at a bar when DJ Fatxo called his driver, Geoffrey Wanyeki, to drive him home, claiming he was too drunk to drive. Wanyeki arrived with DJ Fatxo’s cousin, Christopher Wang’ombe, but despite the initial claim of being too drunk, DJ Fatxo drove himself, Jeff, and the three women home, while Wanyeki and Wang’ombe traveled separately.
Ngugi questioned the purpose of going to DJ Fatxo’s house since the driving assistance was no longer needed. Once at the apartment, DJ Fatxo asked Jeff to rest in a bedroom because he appeared very sleepy. Ngugi alleged that a commotion ensued in the bedroom, during which Jeff was killed. DJ Fatxo then hurriedly drove the women home, seemingly to eliminate witnesses, and stayed in his car in the parking area upon his return.

Ngugi testified that Wanyeki and Wang’ombe were seen outside the building on the phone and later re-entered the house. Around 5:40 am, they were seen taking the lift to the apartment, and at 5:47 am, CCTV footage captured Jeff’s body falling from the building. Ngugi asserted that Wanyeki and Wang’ombe forced Jeff’s body through a small window, as it was too narrow for Jeff to have gone through on his own. He added that the manner in which Jeff’s body hit the ground indicated he was already dead before the fall.
Ngugi urged the magistrate to hold DJ Fatxo, Wanyeki, and Wang’ombe accountable for Jeff’s murder. Preliminary findings by the DCI also supported the conclusion that Jeff did not force himself through the window and indicated a struggle in the house, based on forensic evidence.
Jeff, 23, was buried on March 3, 2023, in the Likia area of Njoro in Nakuru County. His body was later exhumed for a second postmortem following a murder investigation. The inquest will resume on October 1, with 35 witnesses expected to testify. So far, Jeff’s parents, Peter Ngugi and Ann Mwathi, and his uncle, Muchoki Mwathi, have provided their testimonies.
