The Eulogy:

Janet Wanja Mungai, born on February 24, 1984, at Mater Hospital in Nairobi, was the third child of WO1 John Mungai (Retired) and Serah Mungai. She spent her childhood in Kahawa Garrison, attending Kenyatta University Primary School and Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School, where she discovered her passion for volleyball. Under the mentorship of Coach Juma Walukhu at Kahawa Barracks, Wanja’s talent flourished, paving the way for an extraordinary career.

At just 20 years old, Wanja represented Kenya at the Athens 2004 Olympics, beginning a 15-year journey as the celebrated setter for the Malkia Strikers. She won five African Nations Championship titles and participated in global tournaments such as the FIVB World Championships and World Grand Prix. Her career included playing for Kenya Pipeline, KCB, APR (Rwanda), and professionally in the UAE. Wanja retired in 2020 after an illustrious career.

Wanja was not only a stellar athlete but also a devout Christian, a virtue instilled by her mother. She actively engaged in church and youth activities at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kahawa Garrison and later at Chrisco Church. Known for her radiant personality, love for singing, and striking beauty, Wanja was cherished both on and off the court.

She maintained close ties to her Kahawa Garrison community and was an active member of the GAFFE TRIBE welfare group. Her legacy as a celebrated athlete, committed Christian, and compassionate individual continues to inspire many.

In a rare honor, Wanja’s jersey number 7 has been retired in recognition of her contributions to the sport.

Her brother, Kevin Kimani, announced her passing on December 27, 2024, revealing that she died the previous evening at 10 p.m. Wanja succumbed to cancer after serving as the Malkia Strikers team trainer at the Paris Olympic Games and the 2024 World Challenger in the Philippines.

Janet Wanja Mungai will forever be remembered for her unmatched achievements in volleyball and the lasting impact she had on everyone she touched.
