Gospel artist and media personality, Holy Dave grew up a conservative child but after getting exposed to the life out there, all hell broke loose.

A very bright and intelligent kid in his primary school years, coming top of his class and making his parents so proud.

However, after transitioning into high school, life for him took a totally different turn.

Change of plans

Remember, the well-educated TV host was brought up in a strict home but after missing his dream high school by a mark, he had to join Machakos Boys, where life showed a different side to him.

He got exposed to individuals from all backgrounds and having come from a well-to-do home, then he was the hype kid in high school.

The gospel kid sank into drugs and alcoholism, cared less about his education or even his future, because for him, he was just in school to pass time.

He eventually got suspended from school thrice over disciplinary actions, given his last warning after which he would be expelled.

“I wasn’t studying, I was a cool kid in school. Coming from Nairobi and schooling in Machakos; leading strikes, being influential, going to every other funkie,” he confessed.

Sadly, it had gotten to the point where his parents had given up on him, never even showed up for his KCSE prayer day because of the utter embarrassment.

“It’s good they did not even attend because I was in hospital, nursing hangovers from the previous day,” he added.

So bad was his addiction to the point that he had completely lost his memory and lacked stability while sitting for his MOCKs and KCSE exam. Which he eventually flopped in.

“Drugs affected me vibaya sana. There is no way I could pass my exams.”

This forced him to take up all sorts of bridging and short courses including Maths and Computer, just to allow him entry into a University.

That was a solid 3 years of his life gone! Something he lives to regret and looking back, it pains him to the core but well, soon after the up and downhill, he came back to his senses.

As we speak, he is pursuing his PhD as he lectures in one of the Universities.
