Four people have died and eight others are in critical condition after drinking poisoned alcohol in Kubweye village, Kuria West subcounty, Kenya.
The victims, who included the brewer and a seller of the alcohol, began to experience symptoms such as poor vision, breathing problems, and difficulty in talking after drinking the alcohol on Tuesday night. They were rushed to two hospitals in Mabera town, where four of them were pronounced dead on arrival. The other eight victims are still in critical condition.
Kuria West police boss Cleti Kimaiyo said that the other eight victims have been referred to Migori Referral Hospital. He said that police have launched investigations into the incident and that they are working to identify the source of the poisoned alcohol.
Residents of Kubweye village have decried the handling of the issue of illicit brew in the area. They want the government to take stern action against sellers and brewers of the illicit liquor to help stamp out the vice that has caused deaths in the villages.
