Former Malkia Strikers Player Janet Wanja Passes Away
Janet Wanja, a former Malkia Strikers player and celebrated national volleyball team star, passed away on Thursday night, December 26.
Her family announced the sad news in a statement, saying, “The family of Janet Wanja wishes to announce her passing after a courageous battle with gallbladder cancer.” They extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Kenya Pipeline Company for its unwavering support throughout her illness and for covering her medical expenses. The family promised to share further updates in due time.

Wanja was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer in August 2024. Following her passing, many Kenyans, including prominent figures, expressed their condolences to her family.
President William Ruto mourned Wanja as a talented and disciplined volleyball icon who represented Kenya’s sports with honor and dedication.
“She was focused, hardworking, and a true team player. May her family, friends, and the sports community find comfort in knowing that we are praying for them during this difficult time. One day, we will conquer cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,” President Ruto said in his tribute.
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga also paid tribute, acknowledging Wanja’s significant contributions to volleyball.
“Gone too soon, champ. Your impact on volleyball and the Kenyan sports industry was profound and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, champion and legend. Our thoughts are with her family during this tough time,” Olunga shared.

Sports journalist Ole Teya highlighted Wanja’s enduring legacy in sports, while Francis Otwoma, Special Reports Editor at KTN, honored her as a true legend who represented Kenya with pride both on and off the court.
“Her contributions to the Malkia Strikers and Kenyan sports will always be remembered. This is a deeply heartbreaking loss to end the year,” Otwoma stated.
