Family Confirms Cheruiyot Kirui’s Body to Remain on Mt. Everest

The family of the late mountaineer Cheruiyot Kirui has decided that his body will remain on Mt. Everest.

Cheruiyot died on May 22, 2024, during a mission to summit Mt. Everest without supplemental oxygen. His body was discovered 48 meters below the summit after he and his Nepali guide fell.

In a statement on Wednesday, the family announced their difficult decision after extensive consultations, citing the risks involved in retrieving his body, which could endanger more lives.

“Following the death of Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui on Mt. Everest on May 22, 2024, the family has decided to let his body remain on the mountain. This decision was made after careful consideration of all circumstances,” the statement read.

Cheruiyot’s body is located 48 meters from the summit at 8,848 meters. The family acknowledged the danger of recovery efforts and expressed comfort in knowing he rests in a place he loved.

A memorial service will be held in Nairobi and Chepterit village, with details to be announced later. The family expressed gratitude for the support and condolences from friends, relatives, and the outdoor community, particularly thanking KCB Group, Cheruiyot’s former employer, for their support.

Cheruiyot had set out to become the first African to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, having previously summited Mt. Kenya 15 times. The family also extended their prayers to the family of his guide, Nawang Sherpa, who is still missing.
