Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, Media Max journalist, was assisting a police officer when she was shot

A video has surfaced showing journalist Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki assisting a police officer affected by tear gas moments before she was shot and injured.

Kariuki, who was wearing a press jacket, is seen handing a police officer some Colgate to apply to her face.

Kariuki, a Radio/TV reporter with Media Max, was shot three times in the thigh while covering protests in Nakuru on Tuesday.

The Media Council of Kenya condemned the shooting, with MCK CEO David Omwoyo describing the incident as shameful and terrifying.

“The shooting of Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a journalist with Kameme TV, while in the company of other journalists and police officers, is shameful and terrifying,” he said.

The Kenya Editors’ Guild also condemned what they termed as the continued, targeted, and brazen attacks on journalists covering protests.

On Wednesday, journalists from different counties staged a peaceful demonstration, condemning the shooting of their colleague while she was performing her duties.
