Ruth Kamande breathes brief sigh of relief as Millie Odhiambo puts up a fight against death sentence
Ruth Kamande stabbed her boyfriend Farid Mohamed 25 times in 2015. High Court Judge Jessie Lesiit determined that Kamande was an unremorseful cold-blooded killer after he heard that she ignored Farid’s cries for help and deliberately blocked his exit from the house, even as neighbours gathered and urged her to stop and open the door.
The judge ruled that Kamande deserved of a death sentence and all right-minded people couldn’t agree more with him, given the cruel nature of Kamande’s crime.
No to death sentence
Human rights group Amnesty International on Friday July 20th asked that Kamande’s death sentence be commuted to life imprisonment.
Amnesty’s call has been echoed by Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo who argues that life in prison is enough punishment for Ruth Kamane.
Speaking during a TV interview, the firebrand ODM MP said she will be pushing for the abolition of the death penalty in parliament.
“When we were discussing it at Bomas, I was one amongst very few who were calling for the abolition of the death penalty. I am the Chairperson of the Parliamentarians for Global Action in Kenya and we believe in the rule of law and human rights. And one of the things we’re working on this term is the abolition of the death penalty and we’re going to bring amendments to remove the death penalty in our books. This girl is so beautiful… she’s so young… she has lost her entire life; that is enough punishment,” said Millie Odhiambo.
