How Relocating to an Upscale Nairobi Estate Almost Bankrupted Nurse Judy’s Husband

Nurse Judy’s husband, Denis Pasha, has shared the struggles he faced after relocating to a more affluent estate to fulfill his wife’s desire for a better lifestyle.

In an Instagram post, Pasha recounted moving his family from Umoja-Tena to the upscale Imara Daima estate, motivated by his wife’s aspirations. Reflecting on Christmas 2017, he revealed that Judy felt embarrassed living in Umoja-Tena and would often tell her friends they lived in Buruburu to save face.

“Christmas 2017… We were living in Umoja-Tena, but Nurse Judy would tell her friends we lived in Buruburu. She was too embarrassed to admit it—pressure from perceptions,” Pasha wrote, emphasizing how Judy’s determination for a better life drove him to make the move.

Their new home in Imara Daima, a gated apartment complex, felt like an upgrade akin to living in Miami. However, the financial reality soon hit hard, with rent more than doubling, higher service charges, and increased electricity costs.

The financial strain intensified when Pasha’s pub business in Umoja failed after repeated police raids, cutting off an important source of income. Left to shoulder the financial burden alone, Pasha resorted to borrowing from multiple loan apps to keep up with their new lifestyle.

“Man, I can’t lie… I really struggled. I’d walk past the place to buy electricity tokens every time the alarm would hit me. At the time, Judy couldn’t contribute much because she’d just started her first job with a modest salary,” Pasha shared.

Determined to find a sustainable solution, Pasha launched an aggressive job search, applying to nearly 30 jobs a day. His perseverance eventually paid off when he landed a position offering twice his previous salary, allowing him to stabilize their financial situation.

Looking back, Pasha is grateful for the challenges and lessons learned. He credits Judy’s push for better living standards as a driving force behind his growth and resilience, appreciating how her ambition inspired him to reach greater heights.
