Prime Suspect in Mombasa Blogger Sodomy Case Granted Bond

A Shanzu court has granted bail to Omar Ali Mohamed, alias “Nyanya,” one of the prime suspects in the abduction and gang-rape of Mombasa-based blogger Bruce John, popularly known as “Chawa 001.” The incident followed a viral TikTok video in which the blogger criticized Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

Mohamed was released on a bond of Ksh 1 million or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 500,000. This decision was made despite strong objections from the prosecution, which argued that Mohamed poses a flight risk and could potentially interfere with witnesses in the case.

The prosecution revealed that Mohamed allegedly hired the vehicle used to transport Bruce John to the Mwakirunge dumpsite, where he was brutally assaulted and abandoned. Evidence presented to the court, including M-Pesa transaction records, CCTV footage, and other incriminating materials, linked Mohamed to the crime. However, Mohamed denied the charges.

According to investigators, Bruce John was abducted from his residence in Bamburi Jitegemee under the pretense of resolving the conflict caused by his critical video. He was reportedly lured with the promise of an apology on behalf of the governor, only to be assaulted by Mohamed and four other co-accused individuals.
