Eric Omondi Provides Update on Elderly Man Denied Dialysis Amid SHIF Confusion

Eric Omondi has provided an update on an elderly man whose situation gained attention after he was denied a life-saving dialysis procedure amid ongoing confusion surrounding the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

James Kanyore, 76, became emotional while recounting his experience on Citizen TV, where he revealed that he was sent home without receiving dialysis because the hospital requested payment for the procedure—costs that were previously covered by NHIF. Both of his kidneys have failed, and without support, being denied access to this essential treatment could lead to dire consequences.

Kenyans were deeply moved by Kanyore’s story, prompting many to offer their support. Social media was filled with anger, with many blaming President William Ruto and his administration for implementing SHIF without a solid plan to ensure continued healthcare services during the transition.

Omondi located the elderly man and shared that he would need to rely on dialysis for the rest of his life. He provided Kanyore’s contact information, encouraging well-wishers to help him in a difficult situation created by the government that should ensure access to healthcare.

“We found the elderly man… He went with his NHIF card but was told it was null and void. He has to pay 19,000 every week. Both his kidneys have failed, and he will need dialysis for the rest of his life. His number is 0726273345 – NAME: JAMES KANYORE,” Omondi posted.

In response, Kanyore expressed gratitude to Kenyans who supported him after being let down by the government amid the confusion over SHIF. He mentioned that he would require Sh76,000 each month for his dialysis, as hospitals continue to refuse NHIF coverage during this transition period, leaving many Kenyans frustrated and confused as the government proceeds with the initiative despite the backlash.
