Sonko, a father of two, attended the requiem mass for Winnie at Deliverance Mt. Zion Church in Mombasa, where he gave an emotional tribute after more than a year of silence on social media. His words moved many in attendance.

“Our prayer was that she would overcome this. In God’s way, perhaps this is her victory, as she is no longer in pain, but there is pain left behind here,” Sonko shared with the mourners. “I have nothing more to add.”

Winnie had been undergoing treatment in Turkey, battling cancer with incredible strength before her passing. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 21, in Busia County.

In an earlier interview with Nairobi News, Sonko revealed they had planned to welcome a baby girl in 2023 and name her Diamond. They had also designed their dream home together.

Reflecting on their separation, Sonko described it as a break for personal growth, acknowledging the struggles they were both facing.

“She was dealing with something, and I had my own battles. I also struggled due to the journey she was on,” he admitted.

Sonko spoke openly about the difficulties of being a caregiver, saying the experience was mentally and physically exhausting. “Being a caregiver is not easy. I gave everything I could, but I was losing myself. She needed strength, and while her friends and family were supportive, I was the central caregiver, and it was breaking me.”
