Rebecca Cheptegei’s ex-boyfriend dies in hospital after burning Olympic runner alive

A devastating domestic violence incident has claimed the lives of both the victim and the perpetrator. Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries on [Date] following a brutal attack by her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.Tragically, Ndiema also died from the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Cheptegei, a 33-year-old marathon runner, was tragically set ablaze by Ndiema during a heated argument at her home in Kenya’s Trans Nzoia County. The attack left her with severe burns, resulting in multiple organ failure. Despite desperate efforts to save her life, she passed away in a hospital in Eldoret.

Ndiema, who was also severely injured in the incident, was initially hospitalized. However, he succumbed to his injuries on [Date], according to a statement from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The police had planned to arrest him upon his recovery but were unable to do so due to his deteriorating condition.

The attack occurred on [Date] following a dispute over land ownership. Neighbors reported hearing loud arguments between the couple before the horrific incident. Ndiema doused Cheptegei with petrol and set her alight, causing her to run towards a neighbor’s house engulfed in flames. Despite efforts to extinguish the fire, Cheptegei’s injuries were too severe.

Cheptegei, a former sergeant in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, was a rising star in the world of marathon running.She had achieved significant success in recent years, including a gold medal at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand in 2022.

The tragic loss of Cheptegei has sent shockwaves through the athletic community. Her death is a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of domestic violence, particularly against women. As the investigation into the incident continues, calls for increased awareness and action to prevent such tragedies have become louder.
