Kericho Senator proposes Ksh 5 Million fine for unlicensed people predicting weather

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot is set to present several amendments to the Meteorological Bill, 2023 before the Senate, introducing stringent penalties for unauthorized meteorological activities. Cheruiyot, who also serves as the Senate Majority Leader, aims to regulate and control meteorological observations, weather forecasting, and weather modification activities within the country.

One of the key amendments proposed by Senator Cheruiyot includes a hefty fine of Ksh5 million for individuals or entities conducting meteorological activities without proper authorization. The amendment states: “A person who engages in any meteorological observations, weather forecasting activities, or weather modification activities without a permit commits an offence and shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding five million shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both such fine and imprisonment.”

These proposed amendments underscore the importance of maintaining accurate and reliable meteorological data and ensure that only qualified and authorized personnel handle such sensitive and potentially impactful activities. The bill aims to safeguard the public and the environment from inaccurate weather information and unauthorized weather modification attempts.

The Senate will deliberate on these amendments in the coming sessions, and if passed, they will mark a significant step toward formalizing and regulating meteorological activities in Kenya.
