Janet Mbugua Encourages Breaking Free From Societal Norms
Human rights activist and media personality Janet Mbugua is urging people to challenge societal expectations that cause shame and guilt, particularly in personal lives.
Mbugua, a mother of two, shared her thoughts on Instagram, calling shame, guilt, and judgment an “unholy trinity” that disrupts people’s lives. She highlights how societal milestones, like marriage or parenthood, often become benchmarks against which people are judged, especially women. Deviations from these expectations, even situations like co-parenting, can lead to feelings of shame and guilt.
Mbugua emphasizes that these feelings are common, and open discussion can be empowering. “It gives you so much validation when you realize it is global,” she writes.

She encourages her followers to find support in others who have navigated similar challenges and to practice self-compassion as they break free from societal pressures. Mbugua emphasizes the importance of letting go of shame and guilt, “until finally you are free of society’s perception of how life out to be.”
She also acknowledges the importance of faith for some on this journey, stating, “I also believe in the Holy Trinity and that turning our attention to that as we heal is critical.”
Mbugua’s message is a call to embrace personal journeys and challenge the limitations imposed by societal expectations.
