Kakamega Youths Stage Demonstrations Led By UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala

A group of youths in Kakamega town staged demonstrations on Wednesday in protest of the anti-government protests called by the opposition to picket against the high cost of living.

Led by UDA Party secretary-general Cleophas Malala, the group marched through the Western Kenya town holding placards that read “No to violence” and “We want peace.”

The youths said they were opposed to the anti-government protests because they feared they could lead to violence. They called on the opposition to cancel the protests and instead find a peaceful way to address the concerns of Kenyans.

Meanwhile, in Nairobi, a contingent of anti-riot police officers had been deployed to key areas of the city, including Ngong Road and Haile Selassie Avenue. The police had erected roadblocks in these areas to prevent protesters from gathering.

In Mombasa, however, there were scenes of violence as protesters burned tyres and blocked roads. Police arrested several people at the Express area of the CBD.

The protests come amid rising tensions in Kenya over the high cost of living. The opposition has called for the government to reduce taxes and provide subsidies to help Kenyans cope with the rising cost of food, fuel, and other essential goods. The government has so far resisted these calls, saying that it is doing its best to manage the economy.

It remains to be seen how the protests will unfold in the coming days. The government has warned that it will not tolerate any violence, and has vowed to take action against those who break the law. The opposition has vowed to continue protesting until the government meets their demands.
