Fewer Matatus On The Roads As Some Drivers Stay Home Amid Demonstrations

There was a noticeable decrease in traffic on major roads in Nairobi on Wednesday, as some matatus chose not to operate. This was also the case in Westlands, where fewer matatus and private cars were seen on the roads.

It is not clear why some drivers chose to stay home, but it is possible that they are staying away due to expected demonstrations by Azimio la Umoja. A resident who resides along Thika Road said that it took her 35 minutes to get to the Nairobi Central Business District, which is usually a 15-minute drive.

However, Matatu Owners Association Chairman Albert Karakacha said that their matatus were operating as usual. “We are businessmen, not politicians. We did not issue any strike notice, so our matatus are operating,” he said.

Last week, Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) threatened to go on strike on July 12, if the directive by the National Transport and Safety Authority on mandatory re-testing of drivers is not withdrawn. However, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen suspended the re-testing of public service vehicle drivers and their commercial service counterparts until September 1.

Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition is expected to hold demonstrations over the high cost of living. Party leader Raila Odinga said they will not stop until they are heard. He said the demonstrations in Nairobi will be preceded by a rally at Kamukunji grounds.

It remains to be seen how the demonstrations will affect traffic in Nairobi on Wednesday. However, it is clear that some drivers are choosing to stay home, which is causing delays for those who need to travel.
