Grenade Explosion in Nairobi Injures Garbage Collector
A 14-year-old garbage collector was seriously injured in a grenade explosion in Nairobi’s Embakasi neighborhood on July 6. The boy, James Onyango, was collecting trash from the fence separating Embakasi from the military’s Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) when he found a metallic item in the trash. As he was inspecting the item, it exploded, injuring Onyango on his face, legs, and hands.
Onyango was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. The police are investigating the source of the grenade, but they believe it may have come from the HPSS. Bomb experts were called to the scene and picked up fragments from the explosive device for analysis.
In a separate incident, a bomb was found in a sewage drain in Mowlem area, Dandora. A local was cleaning the drain when he found a cylindrical metallic object resembling a bomb. The locals called police, who confirmed that the object was a bomb. The officer in charge of the bomb disposal unit, Paul Nyuto, confirmed that it was a 105mm anti-tank. The experts picked up the explosive for analysis and safe destruction as investigations go on.
It is not clear how the bomb arrived at the scene of either incident. The police are asking anyone with information about either incident to come forward.
