A new survey released by the Kenya Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has found that 15 out of every 100 women and 17 out of every 100 men between the ages of 15 and 49 have never engaged in sexual activity.
The survey, which was conducted in 2022, found that the percentage of people who have never had sex is highest among those aged 18 to 24. Overall, 48% of women and 35% of men in Kenya have never been married.
The survey also found that there are significant differences in the age at first marriage between rural and urban areas. In rural areas, the median age at first marriage for women is 20.1 years, while in urban areas it is 22.4 years. The survey also found that the median age at first marriage increases with wealth level.
In terms of sexual debut, the survey found that 20% of men and 15% of women in the age range of 25 to 49 had their first sexual encounter before turning 15. By the age of 20, 72% of men and women in this age range had experienced their first sexual encounter.
The survey also found that the use of modern contraception methods is increasing in Kenya. Among women who are currently married, 57% are using a modern method of contraception. This is up from 48% in 2014.
The survey findings provide important insights into the sexual and reproductive health of Kenyans. They highlight the need for continued efforts to promote sexual health education and access to contraception.
