Nairobi governor Mike Sonko allowed hawkers to ply their trade within the Central Business District (CBD). Sonko’s directive allows hawkers to operate in the CBD from 2pm.

Hawkers have now taken over pedestrian walkways and all empty space in the CBD. Kenya Archives in particular is a hot spot for hawkers.

Hygiene has now become a major challenge as hawkers throw garbage all over the CBD. Street children, beggars and pickpockets have also flocked into the CBD.

Nairobians protest

Nairobians have been grumbling on social media about how standards have deteriorated in the CBD. The CBD has been reduced one big open-air market.
