Integrated telecommunications provider Orange joined hands with celebrated hip-hop artiste Juliani, to support this year’s Mtaa Challenge competition.
The Mtaa Challenge is a business entrepreneurial challenge organised in association with Kama Si Sisi, an entity that encourages local solutions to local problems through hood-to-hood competitions. It seeks to connect individuals from the same mtaa (estate/neighbourhood), bring them together to discuss common issues affecting them while looking for creative, relevant and sustainable solutions that will better their livelihood.
The two-month competition that started in March, targeted young people; empowering them to be more responsible and accountable to themselves and their community. More than 1,300 young people from across Nairobi signed up for the challenge’s second season, from which 15 teams of a minimum 15 members each representing different neighbourhoods across the city were created.
Magneta Group from Kayole was the winner of the second edition. The group receives KSh100,000 as seed investment for their initiative, a modern library for students to study.
Magneta will create a colourful, fun and conducive space that will make learning fun, relevant and informative for school going children between classes 5 and 8 in Kibera. The second and third groups will receive KSh 75,000 and KSh 50,000 respectively as seed funding.
