Here’s The Real Reason Why Nairobi News Has Been Killed By Nation Media Group

The Nairobian.

Well, that’s the unspoken truth. But according to the statement issued by Nation Media Groups today:

Little advertising and slow sales growth at a time of rising costs made Nairobi News survival impossible.”

That is the sanitized version of saying, “We couldn’t compete with the edgier newspaper “The Nairobian” because we have stringent, restrictive ethics code that stipulates that everything we do must be family friendly even when the amoral world of business shows us that this strategy is detrimental to our business model.

The rest of the statement issued read like one big P.R campaign and went on to say alot of nothing about clouds, rainbows and unicorns prancing about in a field where fairies lived;

November 20 last year seems like only yesterday. Such has been our whirlwind life of enterprising journalism – improbable exposes, dramatic pictures and a refreshing menu of human interest features telling you the story of the city.

With our captivating blend of simple writing and bold headlines, we reached out to the ordinary Nairobi resident. We spoke to ordinary housewives and adventurous teenagers, and we brought new energy into the reading choice of Nairobians proud of their home city.

Thank you for standing by us and keeping the faith. So long, we are gone but Nairobi lives forever.

Wait, let me be more refined about this:

The real, unbiased reason for killing Nairobi News is the fact that The Nairobians “no holds barred” approach to reporting blew NMG out of the water but having been constrained by the straight jacket of an ethics code that made no sense in the business environmnent they were in. Let us be real and call a spade a spade, The Nairobian and Nairobi News were both glorified tabloids. The Nairobian embraced this and is doing well.

FAREWELL 2

Nairobi News wanted to be pretentious, elitist even about being a tabloid. Thing is, as the Igbo say, if you do not want to trade with the devil, you must stay out of bis market.
Ask me how I know to give this advice. Go ahead and challenge me… Ghafla. There is a genius in being outright ratchet. Ask The Nairobian. Also, the small fact that hindsight is 20/20!
