Here Is The Daily Nation Editor Who Has Been Suspended For Writing A Stinging Critique Of Uhuru Kenyatta

East Africa’s biggest media house Nation Media Group has come under criticism from different observers and readers for the suspension of a senior editor following an editorial he wrote.

Denis Galava, a long serving employee of the newspaper who at the time of his suspension was the a Senior Editor Special Projects wrote a hard hitting editorial addressing the President. Given that the editorial is a sensitive part of a newspaper often giving the media house’s position on national matters of the day, it is usually a well consulted piece among the newspapers editors.

In a memo addressed to the Nation Staff, The Group Editor In Chief Tom Mshindi cites the apparent breach of process in the publishing of the now hot editorial on last Saturday’s Nation newspaper. Part of the memo reads;

The lack of consultation and review of the editorial on the material day – where one writer takes a strong position on such an important issue single-handedly without broad discussion and consultation – is a significant departure from established procedure

It went on to list a new process for the vetting of editorials and editorial cartoons.

I require to see all our editorials and editorial cartoons,” he says.  “A full length editorial, a Page One commentary or an editorial expressing particularly strong views must first be discussed by senior editors in conference as well as with the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-chief would then inform the GCEO (Group CEO) and the Editorial Board Committee.

The actions of the media house led to criticism of the paper allowing itself to be interfered with state power brokers and having its independence compromised. Even individuals seen as government operatives have like Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi condemned the move saying on his Twitter saying  “It is simply scandalous and utter shame that nation media has suspended a senior editor for writing a smashing editorial “
