Hand Grenades, Ethnic Eviction Claims And Police Lethal Force; Why Today May See The Bloodiest IEBC Protests Ever
Despite half-hearted efforts to reach an agreement over Madaraka Day, the government and CORD leaders failed to reach a solution over the dismissal of the current IEBC office holders.
As such, the opposition have said their weekly Monday protests will be back in full force today. Going byt the exchanges from the two sides and the Inspector General warning that the protests are illegal and will as such be met by full force, the situations looks already bleak and causalities will sure be recorded countrywide.
However, Nairobi seems set to even have a grave situation if warnings first given by the police and other circulating on social media are anything to go by. On Sunday, Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Kiome released details in a media briefing saying there were plans by certain individuals to ferry hand grenades to Kibera to be used during protests. He also said there were plans for ethnic evacuations in Kibera according to intelligence received by the police.
He further said the police had names of the people involved in the plan and reiterated the police will use all force necessary to stop the plan. Later on Sunday unverified media alert said to be from the NIS was making rounds on social media warning people of plans by some protesters camps to use petrol bombs as well as other pf an opposing gang armed with machetes to counter the protesters.
This makes up for a grim picture and means this could be the most IEBC bloodiest protests if any of the reports are true and all groups go ahead with their plans. It is thus wise to keep a vigil today.
