Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto was on Monday airlifted to Nairobi to seek further treatment after sustaining injuries following a confrontation with the police in his county.
Governor Ruto had been attending a church service at Njerian AGC, when he received text messages of his supporters who were complaining of police harassment during a football match at Silibwet Stadium, Bomet County.
Some operators even made their way to the church where Ruto was in the congregation to personally raise the same complaint to him.
Ruto responded to their calls and went to the stadium with the aim of convincing the police officers to release the youth who had been arrested
Upon his arrival, Ruto was welcomed by a crowd who were cheering and flashing signs of his party, Chama cha Mashinani.
A host of Jubilee Party MPs and MCA were also in attendance at the stadium.
A fierce argument later ensued between Ruto’s supporters and the police during which tergas canisters were lobbed.
During the melee, the governor sustained a cut below his right eye after a teargas canister hit him.
His security personnel later whisked him out of the stadium under a hail of teargas as the police officers charged at them.
Afterwards, Ruto condemned the incident saying that the police action was unprovoked and gratuitous.
“It is apparent that they were operating under political instructions not the dictates of the law,” Ruto said.
