Gidi Gidi of ‘Unbwogable’ Reveals How He Landed His Radio Job
Unless you’re generation ‘xaxa/qwendar/xema you must be aware of the hit song, “Unbwogable”. So popular was the song that the then most popular political party, NARC, adopted it as its main campaign anthem in the run up to the 2002 General Elections. Before fizzling out of the music scene in 2005, the duo had done four albums; ‘Ting Badi Malo’, ‘Ismarwa’, ‘Unbwogable’ & ‘Many Faces’.
While Maji Maji set up a radio station (Ghetto Radio) one half of the rap duo, Gidi Gidi landed a job at Radio Africa Group’s Radio Jambo. While Maji Maji’s journey to stardom has been well documented, Gidi’s has not. The Breakfast Radio Host at Radio Jambo has just revealed how he got to where he is.
Here’s his story;
Four years ago I was a humble Web Developer at UNEP. One day I met Carol Radull at the Stadium, she told me that Radio Africa was starting a Sports Radio Station and convinced me to join the team.
She thought i was very interesting for Radio, we used to argue alot about football. At first i was hesitant, I couldn’t Imagine resigning from a UN Job for Radio.
I gathered some courage, resigned from UNEP and Joined Radio Jambo as a breakfast show presenter. 4 years later Radio Jambo has grown to the TOP 3 most listened Radio Stations Country wide.
One life lesson that i have learnt with this achievement is: If you believe in something go for it. If you believe you can do something do it.
May I take this opportunity to thank all my listeners who have seen me grow at Radio Jambo and who always enjoy my show every morning. I am nothing without you. Thank you so much for listening. Thank you Radull, Pete and Radio Africa for believing in me.
I have been approached to move stations but after some soul searching and talks with management I have decided to renew my contract with Radio Africa tomorrow.
Thank you guys and God Bless.
Now you know.
