#PrayForGhana: A-Plus Mocks Kojo Yankson Over Gas Explosion Reportage

Controversial musician and satirist, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as A-Plus has taken to Facebook to air his thoughts on the report by Kojo Yankson as to what caused the Atomic Gas Explosion.

He seems to be making fun of Joy FM’s Yankson for the viral video in which he is seen to be given detailed accounts of the sequence events till the fire on Saturday night. A-Plus is not the first person to call out Kojo Yankson on his assertion.

Several people have come out to dispute Yankson’s chronological order of events. The reason is mainly because he Yankson was not there himself when the fire started; rather he went to the scene the next day to report on the aftermath. His report has been described as unprofessional and infantile.

These are Kojo Yankson’s statements:

“There was a leak during a loading exercise from one of the tanks here in this compound. Gas was pluming up into the sky, blowing up very fast and everybody in the area noticed it…Members of staff at the gas station evacuated immediately and called the authorities. Within minutes, our chichinga stand operator decided to start work. In spite of the fact that there was escaping gas, he lit a flame under his Khebab and the flame shot up into the air and connected with the gas that was gathering in the air above the heads of all the people standing around…this flame connected with it [the gas] and set the entire sky above the people at this junction ablaze.”

Below are some of A-Plus’ Facebook posts;

However, Kojo Yankson insists he is right in his a blow-by-blow account. He posits that critics of his report have a problem but unfortunately, he cannot offer solutions.

Ok. So I am wrong, the eyewitnesses are all wrong, the fire officers I spoke to, are all wrong, but you – who were sitting at home while we were on the ground, working to get you information – you are right? Ok, I understand your problem and I am not equipped to solve it. Let’s all wait for the official report. That ought to settle this once and for all. Thanks for your feedback, everyone” his Facebook comment read.

Since the official cause of the fire is not known; we would have to wait a while before one party is vindicated or not.

#PrayForGhana: How A Khebab Seller Allegedly Caused Fire Explosion

This is the third gas explosion from a fuel station.

Last Saturday, around 7:30pm, Accra literally shook when an explosion rocked the night sky. Many people did not know what was happening when they felt the earth shake. They looked up in the sky and saw a fireball. This fireball could be seen from about 30km away.

According to eye-witnesses, the explosion struck when a gas tanker was offloading its contents at a station. The gas started leaking and created a gassy cloud in the area surrounding the filling station. The attendants at the station started evacuating people from the area to prevent any mishaps.

However, it seems that the evacuation exercise did not extend far enough because a man selling roasted meat (chichinga) by the roadside may have been the person to have caused the explosion. According to witnesses, this khebab seller allegedly started his business around the same time that the cloud of gas was thick in the sky. It is said that when he struck and lighted his grill, the flame caught on and erupted in the first explosion.
The fire instantly spread to a fuel station opposite the gas filling station. Ferocious fireballs flew into the air changing the skyline and turning it into a hazy cloud.

So far the official report as to the causation of fire has not come out but this is the reports that are being floated by people who witnessed the explosion. However, there are so many questions surrounding this cause. Why would you light fire when you can smell gas around your vicinity? Why wasn’t the evacuation exercise given a wider radius? How was it possible that people with fire accelerants sell close to filling stations?

The gas explosion at Atomic Junction in Accra has so far claimed at least seven lives and injured more than 132 people, according to official estimation. Also, more than 20 vehicles and other properties were also consumed by the raging fire.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this fire. It is our hope that lasting solutions are found to prevent future occurrences.
