Film Directors Guild Of Ghana (FDGG) Withdraws The Name Of Gollywood
The the Film Directors Guild of Ghana (FDGG) withdraw the name ‘Gollywood’. Furthermore, they unveiled the new name for Ghana Movies at the Accra International Conference Centre. This was during the 2nd Edition of the G@60 Years on Film Summit.
However, there was a lot of backlash from prominent actresses and Ghanaians. Furthermore, they described the President of the FDGG, Richard Mensah as a leader without consultation skills. Also, they stated that he is an autocratic leader who does things without seeking ideas from his members.
Therefore, to avoid further backlashes from “angry Ghanaians”, the President and his team retreat the name given to the Ghana Movie Industry.
FDGG retracting the name Gollywood
However, even after retracting the name, angry Ghanaians tagged FDGG’s President and his team as cowards.
But according to an executive member of the guild, Mr Haruna Seidu Soale, the leaders of the guild retracted the name Gollywood not because of fear.
He made this explanation to Sammy Flex, the host of Zylofon FM’s “Showbiz Agenda”. He stated that Ghana movie industry has no identity in the international level.
“Our industry has no identity. When you travel to other countries, our movies are tagged as Nollywood movies.”
