I Left Ghana Because Of Lack Of Structures – Rocky Dawuni

Ghanaian international Reggae artiste, Rocky Dawuni talks about his music. According to him, he left Ghana to pursue his music career in Los Angeles, U.S.A. This is because there were no institutions in Ghana to promote musicians internationally. Moreover, he added that his producers told him his genre of music will fail at home.

Furthermore, Dawuni stated that he listened to “incredible” Ghanaian musicians growing up. However, none of them went international due to the lack of structures.

Therefore, Dawuni noted that he travelled to Los Angeles to learn more about the industry so that he could get an international appeal.

He made these statements to Prince Benjamin on the Class Drive on Class91.3FM. The award-winning artiste said:

Rocky Dawuni about leaving Ghana

“Ghana is home but Los Angeles was part of my outreach. I travelled out there because having all these great legends here who should have had the opportunity of travelling and being very well known beyond the borders of Ghana, the institutions were not there to push these incredible musicians.

“But you only had to turn to Mali, Ivory Coast or any of the French-speaking countries and certain artistes that cannot be compared to those we had here, will find their way through France, and all of a sudden, globally, because, there was a French system that was helping francophone artistes to really access the international market.

“So, when I saw that the systems were not there, even producers told me in the beginning that this music is not going to be successful in Ghana, they told me about my style and said it had to be successful somewhere, and I was like its Ghanaian music and I’m going to make sure that I create that success on my own terms because if everybody is telling you that but you trust and believe in who you are and you trust in your talent and you know what you are capable of, nobody can tell you otherwise.

Dawuni continues

“So, I knew that I had to, and I knew that my key will be to learn; education, learning to be a great, better musician will be my key. So, moving to Los Angeles was part of it because that is the hub of music. That’s where all the record labels are. A lot of the musicians were there, so, being in Los Angeles and being in that scene, I started learning from the best musicians in the clubs and eventually I started my own club there and my club eventually became the central point for everybody because I recognised that nobody was going to give African music a right platform, so, I created my own platform and I used it to break into America”.

New Generation Artistes Make Me Proud – Ded Buddy

Veteran musician, Ded Buddy talks about the new crop of artistes.

Moreover, for him, this new generation of artistes lift the image of the country high. Therefore, they deserve all the support of Ghanaians. He made these statements to Showbiz.

“The Bible admonishes us to give honour to those who deserve it and I think that these young boys, I mean KiDi, Kuami Eugene and the many others deserve our appreciation because they are doing very well.

“Personally, I’m very proud of them because they have proven that Ghana has a lot of talent and the available support will make them excel”

Furthermore, he stated that his admiration for KiDi led to why he featured the young act on the remix of his hit single, Yebesa.

“I think we are gradually accepting our own because if my records are right, Ghanaian songs have been reigning for years and that is quite commendable and a good sign for our music industry”

However, Ded Buddy called for support for old acts.

I have said this before and I will use the opportunity to reiterate my point that people must not be in a hurry to retire old acts.

“Besides, the older the wine, the finer so I believe that experience also counts, we must give everyone an equal chance to perform”

Ebony Would’ve Never Left RuffTown Records – Bullet

Artiste manager, Ricky Nana Agyemang, popularly known as Bullet, has refuted claims that the late Ebony Reigns wanted to leave his RuffTown records.

According to him, the Ebony he knew, would have never left his record label.

Speaking on “Behind the Fame with Lexis Bill” on “Drive Time” on Monday, Bullet explained

that even though he and the artiste had their disagreements, it was nothing major for Ebony to leave Ruff Town Records as people thought.

“The Ebony that I knew knows I did a lot for her and she will never do that,” he said.

There were several rumours after the death of the dancehall diva; one notably being that her relationship with Bullet had gone sour.

These rumours however exploded after the CEO of Zylofon Media Nana Appiah Mensah tweeted that Ebony wanted to leave Ruff Town for his record label.

Bullet, however, dispelled rumours that he and Ebony ever had a fall out.

“She never came anywhere to say Bullet did this or that. There was no interview that she badmouths me. Listen to all her interviews,” Bullet said.

He stated that in his short-lived relationship with Ebony, he never bullied her to do anything she did not want to do.

“If anything, she was the one who dictated what she wanted to do,” he added.

“If Ebony wanted to leave, it was because some people might have tried to win her over by giving her promises of money or convince her of better opportunities elsewhere,” he told Lexis Bill.

Bullet again added that artistes fall out with their management or groups mostly because

the people around them convince them.

“You are the man, you’re doing everything and you can stand on your own,” he commented.

He also explained his introduction of Wendy Shay during the 2018 Ghana Music Awards

had nothing to do with a sour relationship with Ebony.

“It was my award when I won the songwriter of the year that I introduced Wendy Shay [it was not to disrespect Ebony] and I know that all I did Ebony was going to be happy because she knew I loved to bring out the talent [in people].”

“Ebony was very close to my heart no matter what she did,” Bullet added.

Ebony, born Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, died in a gory accident on the Sunyani – Kumasi road last year.

Meanwhile, the relationship between Bullet and Ebony’s father, Nana Poku Kwarteng continues to be sour even a year after her demise.

Her one year anniversary is however slated for March 31.

Also, he added that Frank Naro was only a young boy at the time. Therefore, he didn’t really have anybody in the industry. As such, he took him as a younger brother and fed, clothed and housed him for years before he, Naro became accepted as an entertainer.

Also, Manu reacted to Naro’s claim that he met Black Stars players John Mensah and Asamoah Gyan through his own effort. He revealed that it was through him that the younger actor cum musician met these two great footballers. “I have great talent and that is why I don’t settle for mediocrity, I receive a lot of scripts but I don’t honour them because sometimes the directors don’t appeal to me, there are other times too that they give you scenes to act without dialogue, I can’t act that way so I reject them,” Mr. Beautiful noted.
