Aogli Te-Za To Rival Calabar Carnival

The Planning Committee of this year’s Asogli Te-Za has hinted of plans of making the celebration the biggest.

According to the committee, they plan to make this year’s event rival the Calabar Carnival in Nigeria.

The 2018 Te-Za also marks the 15th anniversary of the enstoolment of Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli.

Brigadier General Martin Koku Ahiaglo,(Rtd) is the Chairman of the Planning Committee.

In a media interaction, he revealed that just as the Calabar Carnival has made the Calabar state a hub for tourism and hospitality in Nigeria and Africa, the Asogli Te-Za (ATZ) was being repackaged to change the “character of festivals” in Ghana.

“Te-Za is unique so we are working hard to use this year’s celebration and Agbogbomefia’s 15 years to make Ho tourism destination of choice,” he stated.

Brig. Gen. Ahiaglo said the festival would also serve as an annual stocktaking of occupational endeavours. Especially farming and help mobilize human and material resources for job and wealth creation.

Background

“Te-Za” is an annual festival celebrated by the people of Asogli in the Volta Region of Ghana. It is celebrated in the month of September every year to celebrate the cultivation of yam that was started by a hunter who found the tuber  in the forest during his hunting expedition. According to history, the cultivation of yam among the people of Asogli started when the yam that the hunter hid during his hunting expedition to come for it later germinated and grew bigger. The celebration was brought into Ghana by the Ewe people of Ghana when they migrated from Notse in the Republic of Togo; where it is still celebrated.

In 2004, Togbe Aƒede XIV brought back the celebration of the Yam Festival. It had then been abandoned for over a decade. It has its core goal of educating and entertaining both Ghanaians and visitors about Asogli traditions. The Te Za provides an opportunity for experiencing traditional music, dance, story telling. It is usually climaxed with  a grand durbar to climax the festival.

Modern Artistes Shun Funerals Of Older Musicians — Gyedu-Blay Ambolley

Gyedu Blay Ambolley talks about a trend.

Veteran highlife musician, songwriter and producer, Gyedu-Blay Ambulley has words for the current crop of artists.

He made these statements on GN TV news with Pamela Boateng. Furthermore, he expressed dissatisfaction about how the young artists neglects the older musicians. This is apparent especially when they die.

Moreover, he made an example with Ebony. He stated that most of the artists celebrated her on her death. However, none of them were there when Jewel Ackah and Papa Yankson also passed away.

Also, he stated that for Ghana music to progress, we have to go back to our roots.

Gyedu Blay Ambolley on current crop of musicians

“When we came, we went to the elders to ask questions for them to teach us. All the music we’re doing now was learnt from our elders.

These new crop of musicians also need to come and do so. If they don’t do so, they will fall apart. All the music they do now is computerized; cut and paste.

They are doing Dancehall, they’re doing Reggae…NO!! We have a heritage here and it’s called Highlife music. Every country has its music; what we have is Highlife music so we need to develop it for the world to know what we have.’

I Never Said I Will Not Let My Kids Become Musicians In Ghana – Rex Omar

Veteran highlife musician, Rex Omar has debunked rumors making rounds that he said he would never allow his kids to become musicians in Ghana.

There are several reports on the various social media platforms suggesting that Rex Omar has said he would not allow his children to take music as a career in Ghana.

But speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the “Nhyira” hitmaker said he doesn’t recall making those assertions.

According to him, he meant, he would forbid his children from taking up music as full-time careers in Ghana.

Rex noted further that as lucrative as it may sound, he thinks it would be unwise to depend solely on music in Ghana since it doesn’t pay much, compared to western countries.

“If there are musicians who have made money then it wasn’t through music. They all know the truth. We should understand our country is a small one. You are kind of unemployed if you play 2 shows a year. Some play 200 shows but not the situation in Ghana…” he said.

However, in reacting to his statements on the same Daybreak Hitz show, Ghanaian musician, Akoo Nana said Rex Omar didn’t speak well.

Akoo Nana believes that the statement Rex made has the tendency to kill the dreams of children who want to venture into music in the country.

“It is because of people like Rex Omar that’s why people don’t have money. Don’t discourage the children. When I started my career I looked for a business manager. I respect him to say we should have business but he should look for solutions too.” He Said.
