African Journalists Must Change Image of Africa – Nana Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has some advice for journalists on the continent. He wants journalists in Africa to lead the campaign to change the narrative about the continent. They have to reflect its pressing challenges and success stories.

President Nana Addo made the appeal at the 2017 Africa Business Media Innovators (ABMI) summit.
The summit is happening in Accra for the first time. The theme is “The Changing Face of Media and New Hybrid Models”.

Different Narrative

He made statements about the journalists Journalists on the continent, he said,

“have a duty to help change the image about Africa, and establish a narrative, which is more positive. The externally generated story of Africa might be hard to take. However, so long as there is widespread poverty and inequality, that will be the image portrayed. This means that you, our writers, our journalists from the continent, the writers of the African story, carry a great responsibility. When you write, what you write must be about the limitless possibilities on the continent. What is written about Africa by African writers must have the ultimate reference status.”

New Africa

The President said a new Africa is emerging that is strengthening the determination of Africans to build a new African civilization. This is governed by the rule of law, respect for individual liberties and human rights, and the principles of democratic accountability.
“It is not enough to hold successful elections every four years or to be able to criticize the government and to have a choice of 100 radio stations. The biggest challenge that we continue to face is widespread poverty and, until we eradicate widespread poverty, Africa cannot really join the international comity of nations on an equal basis,” he said.

Furthermore, he adds: “The media has always been a critical feature of the political, financial and business architecture of Africa. The time has come for us to harness the full potential of the media, keep it up to pace with technological changes, so it helps define, and, at the same time, contribute to the sustainable development of the African continent.”

Nana Addo with Host Matthew Winkler

The Summit

Senior executives, entrepreneurs and thought-leaders from media, tech, business and civil society are taking part in the summit. It is under the auspices of the Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the Ford Foundation.
The hosts are Matthew Winker, Co-Founder of Bloomberg News and Editor Emeritus, and Justin B. Smith, CEO of Bloomberg Media. They will examine the many new trends and approaches in the wider communications sector. These range from revenue models to content creation and distribution.
The forum is for media companies to share strategies and navigate the changes happening. Also, the companies are also to devise efforts to impact inclusive and sustainable economic growth on the continent.

5 Ways To Style A Crop Top

Crop tops are a huge trend and it does not look like it is going away anytime soon. Crop tops have been reinvented over the years. Today, crop tops can be worn in diverse ways. This is due to its versatile nature.

Below are some of the ways to style a crop top.

Image: Pinterest

Bandage skirts are gorgeous and sexy. They are more amazing when worn with a crop top. However, because both items are on the tighter side, it’s best to only show a sliver of your midriff so you’re not overexposed.

Crop Tops With A Midi Skirt

Midi skirts are another huge trend. The shin-length skirts may seem conservative, but matching one with a fun crop top makes the look modern and young.

Crop Top With A Maxi Skirt

A fun, patterned maxi skirt paired with a solid-colored crop top is an easy look to dress up or down. Adding jewelry to this look will instantly dress it up.

Add a Statement Necklace

8 English Words You Won’t Believe Exist!

Words play a major role in our everyday speech.

You must think you speak English pretty well, don’t you? I thought so too, until today. Turns out there are so many words out there that describe really common things we encounter every day, but that I had no idea even existed. Impress your friends by casually slipping these words into a conversation at your next big social event.

We went on a hunt and found ten of such words you’d never believed existed.

Check them out below:

1. Kerfuffle (kəˈfʌf(ə)l), (Noun)

If somebody asked you the following question, would you know what they meant?

“What’s all the shouting for? Why are you making such a kerfuffle?”

It means to make a fuss or a bother, usually when people have different points of view. Imagine two of your friends having a minor disagreement over something and making quite a bit of noise – doesn’t kerfuffle sound like a great way to describe the situation?

2.Pilgarlic(ˌpɪlˈɡɑːlɪk), (Noun)

It’s been a while since anyone used this word, though you’ll find it in many older works. It means a bald-headed man or a person looked on with humorous contempt or mock pity.

For example; Those who had come to know him regarded John as pilgarlic.

3. Philtrum(ˈfɪltrəm) ,(Noun)

The vertical groove between the base of the nose and the border of the upper lip.

4.whippersnapper (ˈwɪpəsnapə), (Noun)

A whippersnapper is someone who is younger than you are but also irritatingly overconfident and impertinent, like your little smart aleck cousin.
Examples;
1.some young whippersnapper piped up with a pointless comment.
2.You young whippersnappers!! Always sticking your business in places were it doesn’t belong!

5.Cachinnate (ˈkakɪneɪt), (Verb)

Laugh very loudly.

Think of that friend who has to stop laughing before anyone can even contemplate moving on to the next topic of conversation. Example; “That party last night was so rambunctious that none of us could stop cachinnating.”

6. Dysania, (Noun)

The state of finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning. If you have met anyone who finds it easy to get out of bed in the morning, please get in touch. We’d like to learn their secret.

7. Agerasia

The state of looking younger than one actually is. I guess everyone would like to be in this state.

Example; “Rose was stunned at her grandmother’s agerasia”

8.Hunt-and-peck

Using only one or two fingers on the computer keyboard!

Six Health Benefits Of Drinking Water

Water is the main component of the human body. In fact, the body is composed of between 55 and 78 percent water, depending on body size. Adequate and regular water consumption has numerous health benefits. As an added plus, it has no calories, fat, carbohydrates or sugar.

The amount of water you consume everyday plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body. Experts recommend drinking eight to 10 glasses of water each day to maintain good health.

Furthermore, the Institute of Medicine has determined the adequate intake of total beverage per day (AI) to be about three liters or 13 cups for men and 2.2 liters or nine cups for women.

It helps keep the body well hydrated, which is essential because almost every cell in the body needs water to function properly.

Here are 6 reasons why you should drink more water:

1)Flushes Out Toxins

Helps the body get rid of waste through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones and UTI’s (urinary tract infections).

2)Boosts Immune System

A water guzzler is less likely to get sick. And who wouldn’t rather feel healthy the majority of the time? Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu, cancer and other ailments like heart attacks.

3)Natural Headache Remedy

Helps relieve and prevent headaches (migraines & back pains too!) which are commonly caused by dehydration.

4)Improves Skin Complexion

Moisturizes your skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. Gets rid of wrinkles and is the best anti-aging treatment around.

5)Promotes Weight Loss

Removes by-products of fat, reduces eating intake (by filling up your tummy if consumed prior to meals), reduces hunger (hello natural appetite suppressant!), raises your metabolism and has zero calories!

6)Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue

Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted!

Musicians Not Producing Albums, Only Singles-Kwabena Kwabena

Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena says musicians are not producing albums but ‘singles’.

According to him, the current crop of artistes depends solely on ‘singles’ rather than albums hence their short concentration span in the industry.

The ‘Adult Music’ crooner added that artistes in the country are not producing and promoting ‘genuine’ Ghanaian music.

Kwabena Kwabena Speaks

“We are not growing authentic Ghanaian music. That is the hard truth. If we will be truthful, we can’t depend on the one time singles and all that. The musicians now don’t do albums, reason more artistes are packed on bills. It’s good for the event organizer. If they were all doing albums they will have more time to perform and that will be an advantage to the artiste…” he said on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM with Andy Dosty.

He mentioned songs such as Patapaa’s ‘One Corner’ and Captain Planet’s latest single ‘Obi Agye Obi Girl’ as examples.

Kwabena Kwabena outlined the need for the musicians to produce works that will keep the industry on its toes and put the Ghanaian music on the map.

Kwabena Advises Musicians

The ‘Adult Music’ crooner advised music producers to produce albums that will create a solid connection with their fans for longer performances during shows.

“Albums give you the privilege to perform more songs to your fans. Where is ‘One Corner’? Now it’s ‘Obi Agye Obi girl’. We need to put songs that will make us last as artistes to keep the industry going. We need to work harder…” he said.

Born George Adu, he is currently promoting his new album, ‘Ahyesi’. The album also happens to be his fourth.

Kwabena owns a foundation called KBKB which helps patient with heart disorders and thus organizes a yearly concert on 14 February to help raise funds for that.

5 Benefits Of Drinking Lemon Every Morning

We know most people cannot start their day without a cup of coffee or tea. However, what if there was another option that could become a staple of your morning routine.

The option is taking a cup of warm lemon water. This cup of lemon water has several benefits without the added headache.

Below are certain benefits of taking lemon early in the morning.

Aids Digestion

Lemon juice flushes out unwanted materials and toxins from the body. It’s atomic composition is similar to saliva and the hydrochloric acid of digestive juices. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that is required for digestion. Lemons are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract. The digestive qualities of lemon juice help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating.

Freshens Breath

Besides fresher breath, lemons have been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. Do not brush your teeth just after drinking your lemon water. It is best to brush your teeth first, then drink your lemon water. Also, you can wait a significant amount of time after to brush your teeth. Additionally, you can rinse your mouth with purified water after you finish your lemon water.

Clears Your Skin

The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes on the skin. Vitamin C is vital for healthy glowing skin; while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne. It can actually be applied directly to scars or age spots to help reduce their appearance. Since lemon water purges toxins from your blood, it would also be helping to keep your skin clear of blemishes from the inside out.

Cleanses Your System

Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials in your body. This is because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body. Therefore toxins are released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy. The citric acid in lemons helps maximize enzyme function, which stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.

Balances pH Levels.

Contrary to popular belief, lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. They are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re alkaline. Furthermore, lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid, weak acids easily metabolized from the body. This allows the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood. Disease states only occur when the body pH is acidic. Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove overall acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints.

Therefore, start incorporating this cup of goodness into your daily routine and start reaping the benefits.

Benefits of Activated Charcoal For Skin And Hair

Putting charcoal in your hair and on your face might not seem glamorous, but it’s proven to have many beauty benefits when used safely and properly.

Below are such benefits

Make pores smaller and cleaner
Throughout the day, toxins from the world around us clog our pores. When your pores aren’t clear, neither is your complexion. Activated charcoal when used in a face mask binds to and helps pull the dirt out of your pores, making them less visible. This leaves your face feeling fresh.

Take care of oily skin
If you have oily skin this would help. Activated charcoal may be just the ingredient you need to balance things out. Used in a cleanser or mask, activated charcoal can pull the unwanted excess oils from your skin, leaving it smooth. You’ll want to do this sparingly once or twice per week at the most so that you don’t over-dry your skin. If you already have dry skin, best to steer clear of it for this use, as you don’t want to dry it out even more.

Rid your hair of toxins
Activated charcoal, when used on your hair, can pull out oil, dirt and toxins’just like it does for your skin. You can find regular and dry shampoos that contain activated charcoal. If you have very light hair, you won’t want to use the dry shampoo, as it may stain. In any case, try a test patch before using it on all of your hair at once.

Add volume to your hair

When your hair feels weighted down it’s usually not only a feeling. If you’re carrying around enough dirt, your hair will start to sag and regular shampooing may not be getting it all out. Regular shampoos remove surface dirt, but activated charcoal will pull out even more. The other difference, and this is big, is that activated charcoal isn’t going to leave the residue regular shampoos will, so your hair will feel lighter and have more volume.

Remedy scalp conditions
Dandruff, redness, oily and itchy scalps may be relieved with activated charcoal. You can use it as a scalp treatment before you shampoo or can be mixed in with your shampoo. The activated charcoal will work on your scalp the way it does on your skin and hair: pulling out toxins and purifying.

Her lashing was not limited to people with tattoos. She had more to say about people who drink and smoke. She placed emphasis on how she has an issue with people who smoke. She quickly added that she sees people who inhale and exhale the smoke of tobacco or a drug as “bad”.

Ghanaian Journalists Ask One Way Questions – Celestine Donkor

Gospel musician, Celestine Donkor has some thoughts on the way Ghanaians journalists do their work. She believes that Ghanaian journalists don’t make interviews interesting.

She recently performed at Steve Crown’s maiden edition of “Nations Will Rise & Sing “ concert in Nigeria. During this concert, she believes she attained a new level of spirituality for her music career after Ron Kenoly laid his hands on her.

In an Interview with Peace FM’s Sammy Kumah, Celestine Donkor states that she feels Ghanaian journalists ask one way questions. She said while in Nigeria she was asked questions by an international media outfit that made her think deep.

I was approached by an international media outfit after I performed on stage and the questions that were posed to me were very deep and detailed. Their questions didn’t tone one particular direction. It kept me thinking very deep. They didn’t ask me questions like how did I start my career”.

Celestine Donkor added that “Sometimes I go for an interview and am able to predict questions that I will be asked, this is because Ghanaian Journalists ask one way questions and it doesn’t bring out the best in the interviewee”

Popular gospel musicians like Nathaniel Bassey, Chris Morgan, Joe Praize also thrilled patrons with an amazing performance at the event.

We will be expecting a response from journalists soon.
