Get Ready For a Great Jazz Experience this Friday
This Friday the ‘Jazz Girls’ will be taking over the Michael Joseph Center on Waiyaki Way as they serenade and entertain attendees with the best that the genre has to offer.
‘Jazz Girls’ is an all-girl 5 piece jazz band made up of extremely talented Kenyan musicians who include:
1. Loice Adhiambo, who is the youngest member of the group and has been playing the flute for one and a half years. She has played for jazz maestro Joseph Hellon and also for Kathy Kiragu, and has been part of the Heineken Jazz Experience. Loice also plays the piano, sings, is a song-writer and teaches music.
2. Vicky Njeri, a rock drummer and arranger has been playing drums in the rock band Murphy’s Flaw for four years. She has been involved in projects such as Murphy’s Flaw’s high school mentorship programme, and was a part of the recording of the band’s two albums. Her influences include Chad Smith, Phil Willis, Amani, Travis Barker, Sade and Jon Dolmoyan. Vicky is a mother of 4 beautiful children and is also an Architect.
3. Judith Njuguna, an all round musician, has been in the Kenyan music scene as a bassist for about 5 years. She plays piano, drums, guitar, but she is known as a bassist and a double bassist. She has played with various artists and is the band leader of her band – the Silk Notes.
4. Sage is mainly a soul-jazz musician but is diverse and can write in almost any genre. She was recently turned to playing the guitar. She released a single in 2011 titled “I don’t really want to” and she is currently working on her debut album. Her songs revolve around love, both its presence and its absence, infusing relatable lyrics in her songs which usually have a direct message. She is inspired by life, love and all things musical.
5. Kathy Kiragu is a jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, songwriter and music director. This multi-talented artist got introduced to music early in her life starting recorder and piano lessons at the tender age of 5 and 6 respectively. However, it wasn’t until she joined the Jether House of Music, under the tutelage of Joseph Hellon, that she got her firm foundation in music. Kathy is now a classically-trained pianist and is currently on the highest level in classical piano.
Even more interesting is the fact that the band was born out of the recently held music ‘Woman’ charity event at the same venue. This then will be their very first time performing as a band.
The date is Friday 29th of June from 7:00pm and entry will only be Kshs. 500.
