Former Miss Kenya Lashes Out At KOT Arguing with Mike Sonko Over Lupita’s Hollywood Achievements (Part II)
Here’s the second part of Rachel’s response to the KOT who was trying to argue with Sonko on Twitter over whether Lupita achieved her accolades by virtue of her talents or otherwise.
Who told you that your opinion matters that much anyway? Who are you to try and put someone down? Do you know them, feed them, finance them or offer any other essential Fs in their lives? Trying to essentially tell them that they should tone down their efforts for the comfort of your self- embraced mediocrity… Sigh. Misery sure loves company but the fact is no Kenyan can take from another what is meant for them so either support or bugger off.
I remember being back in Kenya when spotting a celebrity/ athlete, say walking in town. Now that was 2007 and earlier so I hope this has changed but most people would do their very best not to acknowledge them or let them know they actually recognized or cared about them. It was kind of sad actually because the supposed-to-be-celebrated-person would be painfully aware of what they were doing too. It’s a Kenyan thing. I used to think that it was because Kenyans do not like to inflate egos because they prefer humility but I later realized that it comes more from a place of “you, as a Kenyan, do not deserve to be put on a pedestal over me” because those same Kenyans will turn around and lose their minds in adoration if a random American has-been celebrity from 1996 happens to show up for vacation. They will want pictures, autographs and whatever other bragging rights they can take away from that experience but when it comes to a local celebrity it’s all, “Nonini who?”.
Ironically, it was not about humility but more about their own egos and taking that moment to put that person down and show them, “you’re not better than me!”. Yeah, I said it. Kenya, the land where people will love you if you are foreign but treat you like crap if you are one of them…
It takes guts to follow your dreams, whether you’re in Nairobi, Nyanza, Kiambu, Europe or America. What you have to say on social media or otherwise doesn’t change what’s destined for that person no matter how hard you try to bring them down. Now, NOTE before the Kenyan twitter KGB, aka #KOT, comes attacking with their best Googled one liners, I said some Kenyans NOT ALL. Thankfully, not all suffer from the crabs in a barrel infliction. If you are not this type of Kenyan then this should not bother you but otherwise, a hit dog will holler. Go Lupita and any other Kenyan taking strides to better themselves. Less hating and more supporting Kenyans… Less hating and more supporting. Be inspired, don’t conspire. Deuces!
