Facebook Adds Gay Marriage Icons to Timeline

As one of Facebook’s co-founders, Chris Hughes, married his longtime partner, Sean Eldridge in New York City, USA last Saturday, the social networking website chose to symbolically introduce marriage status icons which depict same-sex couples.

Traditionally, when one changed their status to ‘married’ there was an icon of a man and a woman on the timeline, but a recent update has included the choice of making it either two men or two women according to the circumstance.

In 2011, Facebook added “In a Civil Union” and “In a Domestic Partnership” options to user profiles. In addition, the site has also taken significant steps towards preventing anti-LGBT bullying, creating the Network of Support with GLAAD and other LGBT organizations in 2010.
