The judiciary minted millions of shillings and was the clear winners in the recent auction they had for their vehicles.

Having advertised crazy and very low base prices, many expected this to be a place they can get bargain deals regardless of the condition of cars. With some cars set as low as 25,000 and 34,000, the hoi polloi showed up in masses for the chance to own four wheels.

The massive shock however was to get to the auction and find bids that blew the base price of the water. The Peugeot set at 25,000/- was the lowest sold but still for Kshs. 190,000.  The most expensive car was a Land Rover 110 which had a base of 455,000 but got sold for a cool 2 million shillings.

The figures had many complaining claiming the auction did not start from the base price and thus basically cutting them off from the auction at the very beginning.  As is with any Kenyan business, they felt the judiciary had hoodwinked them and used the low prices to get mileage and publicity.

The disappointment was widely shared but this being an auction, the highest bidder and the seller are usually the ones with the last laugh.

With many of the cars even those based at lower than 50,000 KES going for 300,000/- and over despite their condition, the Judiciary left with a fatter than expected pocket. It is a wonder they did not dispose of the cars much earlier when they were in better condition. Here are results of the auction for some of the cars on sale.
